Your driver-guide will meet you at the ship to start your tour. Then relax on one hour drive to the picturesque town of Sorrento on the Amalfi Coast. Admire the dolomite cliffs, towering straight up out of the sea, and typical villages, which have characterized Sorrento's Peninsular for many centuries. Pause for a photo opportunity at a vantage point to admire Sorrento's breathtaking coast. Your tour continue driving along the steep winding coastal road visiting Positano, a pretty fishing village, which has become something of a colony of artists and writers. You can stop for an optional lunch in Positano. In the afternoon you will visit the excavations of Pompeii, where you will see Mt. Vesuvius from a distance. You'll visit the extensive ruins, site of one of the most famous excavations in the world. You may rent audio guides or hire a specialist guide there if you require detailed commentary. Amalfi

AmalfiAmalfi is one of the oldest centers in the area and documents testify to its existence as early as the 8th century B.C. Its splendid position between the mountains and the sea makes the city one of the most characteristic panoramas on the Amalfi coast: its steep covered lanes, almost like corridors rather than real streets, are famous throughtout the world. The first thing that strikes the visitors to Amalfi is the colour: boats in red and green, striped blue and white, with the blue-green note of the sea, the backdrop of the houses with the orange and pink splashes of the flowers climbing up thier wall, and the green of the gardens.

Pompei

The origins of the city are uncertain. The oldest reports date from the end of the 7C. b.C. and the first half of the 6C.b.C. when the first ring of tufa walls was built araund the area. A mixed civilization which blended natives, Etruscans and Greeks led to the city development. Pompei entered the Roman political organization as a "socia" ally) but in 90 b.C. it rebelled along with other italic populations, who demanded equal social and political respect from Rome. Placed under siege the city surrended and become a Roma colony. A violent earthquake struck the whole Vesuvian area in 62 A.D. Reconstruction begun immediately but 17 years later Vesuvius suddenly erupted (79 A.D.) to bury it under ash and rock. The city was rediscovered in 16th Century.

Positano

One of the most famous vacation spots on the coast, Positano, is situated in a splendid gorge wich gradually widens out as it moves toward the sea. From stepped terraces the built up area overlooks a small beach. One of the characteristic features of Positano is the architechture of the houses: cubes, painted white, pink, red, orange, almost all with a small porch in front, some with a spherical dome. The entire built up area is surrounded by green palms an citrus groves, wich make it particulary delightful. Steep stairways, squeezed in between the houses, serves as roads. According to tradition, it was founded by inhabitans of Paestum, from whom they may have inherited its name, who where seeking refuge in tha area after their city had been destroyed by the Saracens.

Sorrento

SorrentoOne of the finest of the many jewels wich stud the peninsula of Sorrento is the city from wich it took its name. The town is situated on a tufa terrace with sheer rocky cliffs wich fall straight down to the see. The amenities of the sight of the natural landscape, enhanched by the flourishing citrus groves, the immensity of the panorama over the gulf of Naples, Vesuvius and Flegerian fields, the extraordinary transparency of the sea and exceptionally clear blue sky make this city one of the sanctuaries of the international tourism. While the origins of its name merge with the myth of the Sirens, no doubt exist to the fact that man already lived here in Neolitic times.
